The Office of the Provost seeks to foster collaboration across Butler University and manage changes in policies and practices that affect the academic life of the University as a whole.

Provost Brooke Barnett is Butler University’s vice president for academic affairs.

In 1855, attorney and abolitionist Ovid Butler opened a school founded on the principle that everyone deserves an excellent education, regardless of race or gender—a bold idea in pre-Civil-War America. He believed that experience is the best teacher, that a love of learning prepares you for success no matter what you do, and that anyone can achieve greatness if they’re willing to put in the effort. Each year, Butler celebrates Founder’s Day to honor Ovid Butler and recommit to the University’s founding principles of inclusivity, diversity, and equality.
